Fashion Mythbusters Volume I

#1.  Black and brown cannot be worn together.

Actually, black and brown together is super chic.  Think a black dress with brown waist belt or black pencil skirt with a brown cashmere sweater.  If you want to try it out, but still feel awkward about it, find a piece that includes both colors in the same garment.

#2.  Baggy clothing will hide my flaws.

This is really one of the worst beliefs to have...because I promise when you are wearing those baggy clothes, they are actually making you look bigger, not smaller.  What to do instead?  Find pieces that fit and flatter for your particular shape.  If you focus on accentuating the good things instead of hiding the bad ones it will help you to recognize items that work the best on your body.

#3.  Short women can't wear maxi dresses.

This is completely untrue!  There are a couple of things I think you should keep in mind though.  Opt for a lightweight fabric to minimize bulk, and look for something that nips in just under the bust.  This is something to remember no matter what type of garment you are wearing, because to the eye it will seem as if this is where your leg line begins adding height.  You can also add a comfortable wedge to add even more height, if you do this be sure that the hem of the dress just about hits the floor.

#4.  You shouldn't mix your metals, like gold and silver.

Although the colors may not be the same they still have the metallic element in common, which makes them work together.   If you are still unsure about it, use the same rule as black and brown: find a piece that already includes both metals together.

Grease is the word...

Greasers, Hot Rods, Pin-Ups, "Sandra Dee's", and pretty much whatever else comes to mind when thinking of the 50's was depicted in the movie Grease.  My favorite part of course, is the fashion, especially because it was a time in history when a woman's curves were truly appreciated!

Sunday, I really wanted to take advantage of one of the few days where the store is actually closed, and  take a real day off...so what did I do?  I laid in bed and watched TV and it was great.  (Let's be serious though, I still did some work, figures)

The highlight of my day was watching Grease.  Love that movie, and I love to sing along! I was even more excited when I learned about the re-release, Grease Sing Along.  Yup you heard that right.  If you want to learn more including days, times and to purchase tickets visit the website GreaseMovie

Now onto the clothes.  While I was watching and admiring what everyone was wearing (it's definitely one of my favorite decades) I started thinking about the merchandise I had in the store inspired by this time.  Then my mind continued to wander about how I would style some of those pieces to give them a modern twist.  I always love mixing the old with the new.  Last stop is sharing it with you...

Check out this dress from Burlapp.  This is a new label I just brought in for Spring, they have great dresses, at great prices.  (This one sells for $154.)  What I love about this piece in particular is how it has vintage silhouette, one that is pretty much universally flattering too, with an oversize floral print that is a must have this spring.  (We have a polka dot version too, if flowers aren't your thing)

OK, let me first say that this mannequin does these outfits no justice...she is not realistically proportionate, and she doesn't have any legs...I know...I'm getting a better one this week :)

From left to right:

This is a simple outfit, that can be throw together in minutes...and you instantly look fabulous!  Great for a night out on the town, or a day in the office.  Change out accessories to easily alter the look.  Swap the belt for a bright color to add some pizazz...or a leather clutch to add sophistication.

Looks best with a almond toe pump or a peep toe.

High Waisted Pencil skirt: $39
Top by Michael Stars: $40
Genuine Leather Waist Belt by Elise M: $38
Polka Dot Clutch by French Connection $98

I love this dress for a number of reason.  First is the shape.  Look how that band across the middle just accentuates the narrowest part, and the skirt and shoulder give it a great hourglass shape.  It also has a surprise in the back ;)

Dress by Industry: $82

Last, but certainly not least is the high-waisted short.  I love these in particular because they are a bit longer, which is great for us adults...and the self belt is super jazzy with the metal details.  Can easily work for day with a simple tank and flats...but also works for a night out.  Follow the same shoe rules as above.

Shorts by Industry: $89
Tank by Michael Stars: $49

Come on into the store to find other pieces to express your inner pin up girl.  And don't forget your red lipstick!

Laundry Codebreaker

So we all know clothing is required to come with care labels.  This is a wonderful thing, because we love our clothes and don't want to ruin them when we wash and dry, but what happens when we don't know what the symbols mean?  No more worries!  Here it is, from Textile Industry Affairs, the source for all things textiles.

Music Festival Fashion

Now that summer has (unofficially) begun, it's time for festival season!   Being a music lover, one of my favorite things about the months of June thru August include the variety of music festivals all around the country, covering  pretty much every genre you can think of.  Whether they last a weekend, a day, a week, or only a few hours they do take a bit of planning ahead, especially when it comes to your wardrobe.  We've all heard stories, some of us may even have experienced it first hand, of the debauchery of the original Woodstock circa 1969....half naked people, covered in mud, and most likely too inebriated to comprehend what was going on around them.  Although this still may be the case among certain festival goers, it is my assumption that most of us want to lounge out, listen to some tunes, meet some cool people and look cute and feel comfortable all the while.  And let's not forget...we must be practical too.

Check out my must haves for fashionable festival attendees!

Cut off denim shorts are the ultimate!  Available in a variety of lengths, sure to please almost everyone.  Why buy instead of DIY?  Because these are frayed below the hem, which means the fray stops there.  Cut your own, and it after a few washes, you may have next to nothing left.

Since we have the bottoms covered...let's talk about the top half.  Of course we have tons of choices, depending on what look you are going for.   Starting with top left:  Woven tunic from XCVI...don't let the 3/4 Sleeve fool you, it's made up super lightweight cotton that breathes, and it will protect you from the sun.  Tye Dye tank from Sugar Lips, it's tye dye, need I say more.  Skyscrapers zip up from WeSC...you never know, you might have a chilly night.  Halter from Rachel Pally, for a more glamorous look.  Tee from Scott Free, the eagle gives it a boho vibe, and the neon makes it modern.  Last, tropical print halter from WeSC, not into the boho thing, go a bit tribal instead.  You're options of course are endless, but you get the idea.

Don't feel like thinking about full outfits?  I don't blame you.  Go for a Romper like this one from Cailey 22, a printed maxi dress, (the ultimate boho chic) like this one from DEPT, or an easy cotton day dress, tye dye always being a good option (from Loveappella).

Last but certainly not least comes accessories!  Opt for beads, feathers, or tribal inspired jewelry, depending on your taste of course.  Throw on a trusty pair of flip flops (like these from Michael Stars) and you are good to go!  Don't forget to grab a cross body bag to tote around all your essentials, bottle of water, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses etc.

Have fun festing music lovers!

Pay it Forward...

This has absolutely nothing to do with fashion, but I had to share!

I just had an absolutely wonderful experience...I went to Starbucks next to my store, as I do most mornings, and waited patiently on the never ending line.  Once I got to place my order I was astonished when the girl at the register said "an anonymous member of the community has decided to pay for everyone's breakfast this morning."

As she handed me this...
(sorry it's such a bad pic)

she continued
"please do something nice for someone else today"

Priceless advice.

Spring Cleaning

The history of spring cleaning is a bit more involved than many of us probably think...if you're interested in learning more, check out this article... About Spring Cleaning from TLC's How Stuff Works

Whatever the origin, and whether or not you practice this old tradition I think it's important we engage for the sake of our closets...not only will it make our significant others happy, but it will help you justify those new purchases you just have to make :)

Here's a list of some things you should get rid of (donate) today!

- Anything you haven't worn within the last year...no matter what your reasoning for it.
- Your "fat" clothes.  All of us women are guilty of having an array of sizes in our closet for all of our weight fluctuations.  Here's a tip, if you don't have the larger sizes to move into, you'll be sure to cut back as soon as your current clothes get a little tight.  Still can't part with them, take them to the tailor and get them altered to the right size.
- Reverse fit jeans.  These should have all been thrown out years ago, but I figured I'd throw it in there, just in case.
- Sheer stockings.  Ladies it's 2010, the rules of covered legs do not apply anymore.  Go bare, or dark, textured etc.  I promise, no matter the quality, they do not look natural.  Worried about blemishes on your legs?  Get a tinted moisturizer, it will give you a hint of color, even out your skin tone and mask blemishes.
- Pleated Pants...these look good on no one.  There is no need to add bulk to our  midsections.  Opt for flat front instead.  This goes for men as well.
-White pumps...yes I know, the 80's are having a moment right now, but white pumps, they must be put to rest forever.  Replace them with a nude pump...these will blend into your foot giving you a fabulous long leg line, and they go with everything!  For white, stick to a strappy sandal, wedge, or wooden slide.
-Oversized t-shirts, sweats, etc.  I promise you, wearing oversized and baggy clothes does not make you look thinner, you are not hiding under them...they are adding bulk and making yourself look bigger.  (This is the same principle as pleats)
- Anything that does not fit and flatter...having trouble deciding if a particular item does this?  Bring it on it to the store and we'll help you figure it out!

Did I forget anything?

Check Mate

Gingham is back! Whether you're going for a picnic in the park, or a trip over the rainbow gingham is a must have this spring.

Afraid of looking like your great aunt's tablecloth? No worries, pair this top from WeSc with crisp white for a sophisticated look. Denim from Hudson, linen from Sanctuary, or even this blazer from Priorities will do the trick.

Want a younger more playful look? Get this tube dress from Dora Landa, the ruffle hem gives a modern twist on a classic print.

Keep the shoes earthy, think espadrilles, or any wedge with a cork or straw bottom. Feeling fashion forward? How about a pair of ruby slippers a la Dorothy? Too much? Red patent leather should suffice.

Does size matter?

I've worked with women all shapes and sizes throughout my career and one of the many things they all have in common are their aversion to what's printed on the tag, and no I'm not talking about the price.

I'm here to tell you, it's not about the size! Ladies, I have confidence that intellectually you know this is true. We are emotional creatures, but we need to get over it :) Every vendor fits their items differently, fabrics, dyes, all those things have influence on how clothing fits. Ever notice that the same item different colors can fit differently?  I promise this is true!

Remember what matters the most is cut and fit. Don't be surprised if things don't fit you off the rack, always fit the largest part of you...and tailor the rest. The difference will amaze you. I know I know, it's one more step, and additional dollars...but if you're spending $150+ on a blazer, don't you want it to look like it was made for you?

Clothing that fits you correctly not only makes you look smaller, but it'll will make you feel fabulous and confident, and put a spring in your step.

Still can't take that ugly number staring back at you?  Instead of passing up on a potentially fabulous garment...cut the tag out!

Panty Faux Pas

The dreaded VPL (visible panty line) has been a problem for us women as long as we can all remember...in this day in age, with all of the choices we have there is no excuse!

Just like with any other piece of clothing cut and fit are extremely important. Not only will it help you win your battle against VPL, but underwear have the ability to make you look thinner.

Here are a few things to keep in mind the next time you stock up...

1. Buy a size bigger than you think you need. This will keep them from digging in and giving you lumps, bumps, and muffin top. Plus: Undies are notorious for shrinking in the wash.

2. Pay attention to the rise just as you would a pair of jeans. This is especially true if you want to camouflage your tummy...higher rise = smoother silhouette.

3. If you have fleshy hips, look for a panty with a thicker strap. Again, this will keep them from digging in.

4. When wearing white...DO NOT wear white undies! This is a common misconception. In order for your panties to remain invisible they must match your skin tone!

5. Thongs are a must have! There are so many different options, you are bound to find one that is comfortable...no more excuses!

6. If you must do full-butt undies, as I call them, make sure it is full enough to cover your entire cheek. This is a must, otherwise they will ride and bunch and it defeats the purpose. Your best bet is to save these for short dresses/skirts. Same rules apply for the boy-short.

7. You should invest in different fabrications. Cottons work best under heavier garments such as denim. But for more form fitting slinkier fabrics, your underwear should be slinky as well, cottons will cause friction and it the garment will stick.

8. Last but not least - when in doubt...go without! Not only can you be completely confident that you have won the battle against VPL, but you'll feel sexier and walk taller.

Not quite ready to go truly commando? Get these:

"...cutting edge underwear. With invisible edges and a patented stretch fabric, commando feels and looks like nothing, but is better than nothing."

*Bonus: They are made right here in the USA!

If you know me you know that I've always been a bit of a rebel...and if you don't, well....I opened a business at the age of 28 during the worst recession in America since the great depression, 'nuff said.

Keeping with my rebel ways, I thought the blog was overrated, but after a year in business I realize there is so much information I want to share with you that I've learned during my years studying and working in fashion, styling and image consulting, and there just isn't enough time to tell you about them on the sales floor. So, here I am succumbing to the rest of the world, and starting a blog where I can do just that.

You won't see constant updates on celebrity gossip, or hear me telling you to wear something just because a celebrity wears it because truthfully, who cares...and to be truly fashionable we must wear what we love and what looks good on us, staying appropriate for the occasion of course. I'm here to help you along the way and teach you some tips and tricks on how to do just that. Don't worry, I'll update you on the latest so called trends...(we'll pretend for that moment it didn't start with a celebrity) and how you can wear it in your real life. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with you, and hope you like it too!

xoxo J

P.S. I apologize in advance if I break my rules about celebrity fashion. You never know what may happen...and I am a rebel after all ;)
